Maricela is a traditional cook, a proud woman of Chatina origin and roots, from a town in the south of the highlands of Oaxaca. Her first language is a dialect called Chatino, her mother tongue. She learned to speak Spanish and is currently still learning and practicing English. She is passionate about cooking traditional Oaxacan recipes with a modern twist. Maricela loves to create dishes with seasonal vegetables and fruits that Mother Earth provides.
After attending the Community Business Academy run by Lowcountry Local First, Maricela and her husband Belarmino decided to create another business that she is passionate about doing where she can do what she loves to do: cook. The business is called TAMALES BY GUADALUPE where she specializes in a wide variety of traditional, vegetarian, and vegan authentic Oaxacan style tamales. Bringing a piece of Oaxaca and its gastronomy to Charleston, all the tamales recipes are created with unique flavors by Maricela. TAMALES BY GUADALUPE offers catering service for any event in Charleston and in the Lowcountry. Maricela is the proud mother of two children.
Welcome to the Table, Maricela!
