Transformation Table's founder settles in Portugal
We are global.
… I knew that even our beautiful marsh grasses and rolling tides were not enough to convince you to stay. You are a traveler; your destiny is the journey.
The journey for you, is freedom.”
In a farewell video from my colleagues and friends at YWCA Greater Charleston, Carolyn Murray, newscaster, journalist, and friend at WCBD Channel 2, nailed me when she said this about my departure. I had recently given notice and was heading to explore Portugal for three months.
My dad used to say to me, “When I die, you’re going to go back overseas.” He’d say it with a knowing smile, as if it was an inside joke between us. My reply was always the same: “You’re right!”
After a career in international development spanning over two decades, I returned to the United States from Kabul, Afghanistan. It was October 2014, and my dad was recovering from a stroke. In his late 70s, I wanted to support him through his health challenges and spend as much time with him as I could. He would pass away in January 2018. I cherish every moment I spent with him. No regrets.
In each country I worked in, I loved the challenge of navigating life in a new community; I loved the ‘rub’ between what I thought I knew and what I would learn – about the country, people, culture, and food.
Learning a new language was always daunting, yet fun. I’ve always said traveling will kick you in the ass if you let it. I was ready to be kicked again. I chose Portugal because I met Zelia and Luis, who invited me to live on their farm after sharing a meal together and picking cherries. I chose Portugal because I love my new library and have already found my favorite café with the sweetest staff.
I chose Portugal because of its beautiful terrain, beaches, and great wine. I chose Portugal because, after a few days in the country, I could exhale. Deeply. I could relax. I found myself smiling for no reason other than I was happy to be there. And I felt safe.
How long I will be here, I don’t know. We will see. That’s the beauty of the journey.
