Every day is Women’s Equality Day

Special Blog Post by Jennet Alterman Robinson

I hosted a Transformation Table dinner just before Covid sent us all into isolation. There were 10 of us and Fauzia Garner, an Afghan chef who is one of my favorite chefs, prepared a magnificent feast of Afghan dishes.

I asked Tina if we could have an Afghan menu as my time as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Afghanistan in the late 1970s was life-changing. What I saw and experienced made me a committed women’s rights advocate. Women had no rights then and even fewer now after the Taliban takeover in Afghanistan. All of us at the table participated in discussing the status of Afghan women. We also shared our experiences being in other cultures and how women were treated.

These kinds of conversations broaden and enhance people’s understanding of the world.

Each August, we celebrate Women’s Equality Day, a commemorative day established to recognize the efforts of the suffragists in the passage of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, giving women in the U.S. the right to vote.

Women's Equality Day is celebrated in the United States on August 26 to commemorate the 1920 adoption of the 19th Amendment, which prohibits the states and the federal government from denying the right to vote to citizens of the United States on the basis of sex. Its observance is one way of educating all of us about women’s challenges both here and abroad. I believe that we should advocate for women’s equality every day, not just on August 26 and that the conversation starts at the table.

Transformation Table is the catalyst for such conversations and plays a critical role in
allowing diverse groups to share and learn.
